Atlas Coffee Club Review: Is This The Right Subscription For You?

If you’re a fan of high-end artisan coffee, though, you may have found that there’s one thing missing from this abundance of quality grown beans: the novelty factor.

That’s why we decided to do the Atlas Coffee Club review.

Atlas have mastered the art of bringing a continually novel element to your routine morning cuppa. No joke! A subscription from Atlas feels a lot like mixing the excitement of a pen pal with the absolute best beverage in the world.

The Atlas Coffee Club Subscription ‘In a Nutshell’

Atlas Coffee Subscription
  • Varieties of Coffee
  • Freshness of Roast
  • Price
  • Customer Service/Care

Atlas Coffee Club is a unique coffee subscription service that specializes in providing a different micro-lot artisan coffee to its members each month. Their subscription comes with information on how to brew, flavor profiles, and even a postcard from the region of interest.

Their flexible preferences also allow you to control the roast, grind, and quantity of coffee flowing to your door on a regular basis from all over the globe.

All in all, we rated them our best coffee subscription for these reasons + more.

Things to Consider Before Choosing a Coffee Subscription

Before considering anything like this, you’re going to want to make sure you’re in the right mindset. Don’t go diving into a decision that will leave you with buyer’s remorse (even though that’s hard to imagine with Atlas)!

Here are a few tips to consider before reading the review.

What are you looking for in a subscription?

Why are you looking for a coffee subscription in the first place? Is it a gift? Are you in a coffee rut? Do you want to increase your coffee bean variety, experience, tasting skills, etc.?

Any popular coffee subscription is going to send you good coffee beans, otherwise they wouldn’t be in business. But knowing what YOU are looking for beforehand is critical.

What are your coffee preferences?

Another factor to keep in mind is what kind of coffee you (or your intended giftee) like. We’re not talking about whether you like one lump or two here.

We’re talking about the beans themselves.

What roast do you like? Do you like fruity beans or earthier flavors? How do you brew your coffee? Do you have a good burr grinder or do you need it to come pre-ground?

This article helps break down many of the different factors that go into choosing the right beans. It’s worth a read.

(Not-so-free) shipping and other hidden costs

Knowing your costs is an important part of choosing any coffee subscription, and one of the biggest “hidden costs” is the shipping factor.

Many subscriptions offer free shipping, but often have higher upfront price points. Other subscriptions keep prices low but throw the shipping back onto you, the customer. Neither one is wrong, but just make sure you check for any hidden costs before making your final decision!

Our Atlas Coffee Club Subscription Review

Atlas Coffee Club know their business. For starters, they take the time to painstakingly curate micro-lots of coffee from some of the best coffee-growing regions around the world.

Of course, traveling around sampling coffee is a pretty nice gig, if you ask us. But there’s no doubt they put in the work with this one! They even continue to monitor and refine their roast profiles over time. It’s not just a set-it-and-forget-it kind of operation.

In other words, with Atlas Coffee Club the product itself is solid.

And on top of a good product, they also deliver an incredible experience, one that brings fresh excitement and vigor to your coffee-brewing adventures.

  • High-quality micro-lot coffee from around the world
  • A novel subscription experience based on an ever-rotating coffee carousel
  • A simple and straightforward subscription with no fuss
  • A streamlined checkout process that makes building your subscription easy as pie! (Which is a delicious addition to your coffee, BTW!)

  • The base subscription is just 12 oz of beans a month, so you’ll be spending more if you want enough to last a while
  • Lacks a flexibility in bean options
  • Charges for shipping

Shipped fresh according to your preferences

Atlas’ subscription, or their “coffee of the month club” as it’s called, roasts and then quickly ships their beans out so that they arrive as fresh as possible, which is a crucial element that we look for in any coffee subscription we review.

Their preferences are also on point. You can choose anything from a “half bag” of 6 oz of beans to two “full-size” 12 oz bags, delivered every 2 or 4 weeks.

As you continue to set up your account, you can also choose from “light to medium” or “medium to dark” roast types (or leave it with a variety of roasts), and can also choose between whole bean or pre-ground options.

However, one BIG factor that you’re going to want to keep in mind is that Atlas Coffee Club shipping is not free. We found it to typically be only a few dollars within the United States, although international shipping is usually quite a bit more expensive.

Purposefully different

This is the big edge that Atlas has over other coffee subscriptions.

Their coffee is always changing not just in terms of flavor and roast profile, but specifically regarding the country or growing region that the beans are sourced from.

This is because they want to deliver a global experience with their subscription, something that gives you the feeling of a world traveler trying coffee at each “stop” whether it's in Kenya, Indonesia, Colombia, or any other coffee growing area.

With that in mind, each month they make sure to offer a uniquely different coffee that is meant to continually surprise and delight their club members.

They even have a reward program, much like a frequent flyer program, that earns you extra goodies like store credit or free shipping as you travel the world with them.

A great novelty gift

The perks here are awesome. Each package from Atlas doesn’t just come with good coffee – it’s also a full-blown “travel package” loaded with flavor notes on the specific micro-lot, tips on how to brew the beans, and even a nice postcard from the coffee’s “home region” to boot!

This makes an Atlas Coffee Club gift an excellent way to surprise even the most accomplished coffee aficionado in your life (you know, that friend with EVERYTHING they could possibly need for their coffee brewing already on their counter).

You can get 3, 6, or 12-month subscription packages. Just make sure you know the preferences of your giftee before you go to set up their coffee subscription box!

“Sustainability isn’t a buzz word”

That’s how they put it on their site, and it’s true. Atlas does NOT take the process lightly. They’re committed to getting good coffee in an honest and upfront manner that puts ethics on an equal footing with quality.

While this approach can be a bit more expensive, it allows them to expect more professional, high-quality efforts from the farms that they work with, which in turn yields both better profits for the farmers as well as elite beans from their crops.

Endorsed by professionals

Atlas isn’t an unknown company. They’ve been touted as an excellent subscription option by the likes of Forbes, USA Today, and multiple other bigwigs.

What does this mean for us? That even the hypercritical professionals have tried this stuff and decided it checks out. There’s nothing quite like the endorsement of a hotshot to reinforce that you’re getting something worth its weight in gold.

When Is an Atlas Subscription Not a Good Option?

Of course, for all of the great benefits, even an Atlas subscription isn’t great for everyone.

If you’re a fan of consistency and getting the same tasting brew every time, you’re going to want to reconsider this one, as you won’t have that level of control over the kind of beans you’re getting each month.

Quantity is another problem. Unless you’re willing to drop bookoo bucks on getting two full bags every two weeks, you might find yourself running out of coffee on a regular basis.

Finally, while the preferences like grind and roast are great, beyond that, the customization for this one isn’t very flexible. You get the beans they give you. If you’re looking for more options, you might want to consider another subscription, which leads us to...

Atlas isn’t for you? here are some other options.
