The Espro Travel Press Review
Espro is focused on achieving better coffee through research. They explore existing brewing conventions to find out how they can improve on them. Their dedication and hard work has resulted in this Travel Coffee Press. Let’s see how well it functions as a travel mug.
Design – 4/5
The Espro Travel Press is proof that looks can be deceiving. From the outside, it looks just like a normal travel mug. But unscrew the outer lid, and you’ll find a plunger and dual-filter setup, similar to Espro’s regular French Presses.
Even though the outer lid is spill-proof, it is not ideal for sipping on the move as it’s a screw-on lid, and can’t be opened with one hand. The plunger rod and dual filters can be detached from the inner lid, which converts this coffee press into a travel mug.
As a travel mug, it can hold 355 ml of your hot beverage, but as a French press, it can only make 295 ml of coffee.
The double-wall vacuum-insulated stainless steel body has a compact, sleek design, which makes it comfortable to hold or even slide into a cup holder. You can buy the Espro Travel Coffee Press in a few different colours, but it’s only available in one size. The Espro Ultralight Coffee Press has a slightly larger capacity at 475 ml.
Performance – 4.5/5
We love French presses, but we’re pretty sure we can agree that finding coffee grounds in your brew is the worst. (1)
Some people consider immersion brewing methods to simply have too much mouthfeel for them.
Luckily, it won’t be a problem with the Espro Travel Press! It features a patented double micro-filter in the plunger (with each filter being 9 to 12 times finer than average), which does an outstanding job at keeping your precious brew sediment free. Not a surprise, given that two engineers founded the company! (2)
Just add hot water and ground coffee to the Espro travel press, and you have delicious French press coffee in minutes. The vacuum-insulated stainless steel construction will keep your coffee hot for 4 to 6 hours.
The best part is that there’s no risk of your coffee becoming bitter (over-extraction) no matter how long you keep it in the travel press.
This is due to Espro’s patented filtration system that stops extraction as soon as you press down the plunger! The Espro travel press also offers you the versatility to sandwich an Espro paper filter between the double micro-filters to trap more oils (3) and obtain a cup of joe that is in between a French press and drip coffee. You can even make French press cold brew coffee in it.
As with any French press, cleaning is not the best part as you must unscrew all the small components, but the filters are dishwasher safe, so you can just chuck them in the top rack. For an easy way to clean this travel-friendly French Press, follow this method.
Value For Money – 4.5/5
Assembled in Canada, the Espro is slightly more expensive than other travel coffee mugs on our list. But that’s because it is two products in one — a travel mug as well as a portable French press. Even the Specialty Coffee Association of America deemed it worthy of one of its Best New Product awards in 2015. (4)
Its stainless steel body seems built to last, and any small parts that wear out are easily replaceable. You can also exchange it for a new one, within one year of purchase, if you’re having problems with it. If you ask us, all these factors make it an amazing value for money proposition.
Do Not Buy The Espro Travel Press If…
You want a travel mug that you can top off at cafes – If you’re after a cafe-friendly travel mug, check out the KeepCup Brew Glass. Its glass body is easy to rinse out for a refill, but it isn’t as durable as the Espro. On the plus side, you can get a 355 ml or 475 ml KeepCup, which ensures you can order a larger coffee drink. Check out our KeepCup review before you decide to invest in one.
You want a travel mug that’s more commute-friendly – With the Espro Travel Press, you will need 2 hands to drink coffee — not ideal if you’re biking or driving to work. For commutes, we recommend the CamelBak Forge. It keeps your coffee hot for hours, has a drinking lid that can be operated with one hand, and has a finger-carry loop. We found it to be the best travel mug for outdoor adventures. So you can be sure it will endure daily commutes.
You don’t need to brew coffee in your travel mug – If you don’t plan on brewing coffee in your travel mug, then check out the Zojirushi Mug or the Stanley Classic vacuum mug. These mugs are practical and durable and will keep your coffee hot for hours.
The Verdict On The Espro Travel Coffee Press – 4.3/5
The Espro Travel Coffee Press lets you brew French Press coffee wherever you are as long as you have access to hot water — and all-in-one slim travel mug. Thanks to its vacuum-insulated stainless steel body, you can enjoy hot coffee for hours.
We particularly like the double-filter plunger and the paper filter option that will ensure a cleaner, sediment-free coffee. If you’re someone who likes to brew coffee in the morning and drink it on the go, the Espro Travel Press is the travel mug you have been looking for.
