The Hydro Flask Wide-Mouth Coffee and Water Bottle Review
The last couple of years have been good for the reusable bottle market. Between Hydro Homie memes and VSCO girls, reusable bottles have become fashionable. Hydro Flask, in particular, has been uniquely situated to benefit from this status/fashion-conscious desire to be healthy and environmentally friendly.
But, is this a case of Instagram versus Reality, or does the Hydro Flask live up to its meme-worthy reputation?

The Wide Mouth Bottle From Hydro Flask Review
Hydro Flask bottles sure are eye-catching in their wide array of bright colours, but it’s the insulated stainless steel design that is the real star. These flasks have gained quite a following on social media, but how do they perform in real life?
Design – 5/5
The success of Hydro Flask’s design is undeniable. Available in 9 colours (along with removable “boots,” which allow you to add a pop of contrasting colour if you desire), the Hydro Flask is one of the most colourful insulated bottles on the market.
Want something exclusive? Hydro Flask has you covered with their limited edition runs. Not feeling their colour options? Apparently, painting your Hydro Flask is a thing! A YouTube video about painting a Hydro Flask has garnered over 4.5 million views! (1)
While Hydro Flasks come in seven sizes, the Coffee Flask line is only available in three — 355 ml, 475 ml and 590 ml (12, 16, and 20 ounces). These sizes are the same as Starbucks’ Tall, Grande, and Venti hot beverage sizes, which may not be a coincidence because according to Starbucks’ customer service: (2)
By bringing in any personal cup, you qualify for a $.10 off cup discount regardless of the size of the beverage.
The discount may be trivial, but the environmental benefits are tangible!
All Hydro Flasks have stainless steel vacuum insulation, but what separates the Coffee Flask line is the flip-type lid that is designed for sipping on hot beverages. The lid can be purchased separately and fits all of Hydro Flask’s wide-mouth bottles. Similarly, you can also buy a straw lid to turn your wide mouth coffee flask into a Hydro Flask water bottle, or a flex lid, which is insulated and comes with a strap.
Performance – 3.5/5
The Hydro Flask is beautiful, but it could offer better performance. They advertise that their bottles keep hot drinks hot for 12 hours and cold drinks cold for 24 hours. However, that’s only if you fill it up and keep the lid closed, not so much in day to day usage. In head-to-head testing, the Hydro Flask almost always is less effective at maintaining temperatures than its competitors. (3)

If your goal is to keep maintain your hot drinks at temperature for a few hours, it is more than adequate, but by the end of a workday, you shouldn’t count on your beverage still being piping hot.
The Hydro Flip lid allows easy one-handed operation, but users note it tends to leak.
One area where the Hydro Flask excels is its beautiful matte-finish exterior, which offers a non-slip grip and holds up extremely well. While the stainless steel insulated bottle is very robust, it is not dishwasher safe as the high temperatures and harsh chemicals can damage the powder-coated exterior.
Value For Money – 4/5
You can get cheaper insulated bottles than the Hydro Flask. However, the Hydro Flask comes with a lifetime warranty, a great finish, and a trendy design. While you could pay less for a good coffee thermos, the savings aren’t a lot, and you will miss out on Hydro Flask’s great customer service.
Things we liked:
- Cool style with lots of colour options
- Easy flip-type lid design
- Non-slip grip
- Great customer service
Things we didn’t like:
- Doesn’t maintain temperature as well as others
- Fairly expensive
Do Not Buy The Hydro Flask Coffee Flask If…

You want to support environment-friendly companies – One major benefit of reusable water bottles is their positive environmental impact. If this is your motivation for purchasing a reusable flask or bottle, then you may be interested in supporting companies that engage in environmentally friendly and socially responsible business practices, which has earned them a B-Corp certification. (4)
Hydro Flask has plenty of charitable outreach programs but is not a B-Corp.
Klean Kanteen offers similar products and is a certified B-Corp. Additionally, Klean Kanteen is part of 1% For the Planet, which means they donate at least 1% of their annual sales (note: not annual profit!) to charities. (5)
The EcoVessel Perk is also an option. It is 100% recyclable and they donate 5% of their sales to nonprofit organizations. Learn more about this coffee thermos right here.
You want the best possible insulation – The Hydro Flask offers decent insulation, but if you want your hot drinks to stay hot for longer, then look at the Stanley Classic Legendary thermos. The Stanley isn’t as easy to use one-handed but offers unparalleled insulation for the price and is cheaper. Not to mention, we found it to be the best coffee thermos of the lot.
The Zojirushi travel mug is another contender for the best performer in thermal insulation. It might not be as tough as the Stanley Classic, but it sports a sleek design and is available in a wide array of colors. When we reviewed it, we were blown away by how long it could keep coffee hot.
The Verdict On The Hydro Flask Coffee Flask – 4.2/5
While fashion is a big part of Hydro Flask’s allure, the bottle is not lacking in substance. If you want to stop using disposable cups, the Hydro Flask Coffee Flask is perfectly sized to take to your favorite coffee shop.

Despite not being as well insulated as some of its competition, the Hydro Flask is capable of keeping your beverages hot for hours, which for most people is more than enough time to drink a cup of coffee!
