And others have poo-pooed them without checking out the science behind it. And there is science behind it.

In fact, the science behind this is so solid, that coffee naps have even been covered in the New York Times. They say it’s good for jet lag.

Still not convinced that drinking a coffee and taking a nap will make you feel more rested and energized?

You see, a coffee nap can help you boost energy and productivity.

Here’s how: caffeine (decaf doesn’t work here) gets absorbed into your bloodstream, and travels to your brain where it blocks a receptor called adenosine.

Adenosine naturally builds up during the day as your internal energy stores deplete, and consequently makes you feel tired.  

With caffeine taking the place of adenosine, you feel alert, awake, and full of beans.

It’s all about how your brain chemistry works – and responds to the caffeine and a nap.

One of the benefits of napping is that during your sleep cycle, adenosine is naturally cleared out of your brain.

You might be wondering how you’re supposed to sleep after coffee.

How Long of a Nap?

This is a big question that gets asked all the time.

A quick 20-minute coffee power nap is all you need.

Or for those of you born in the 70s, a disco nap (apparently people used to take a quick nap before heading to the disco in the 70s. Imagine if they had drunk a coffee before their nap. Maybe disco wouldn’t be dead).

And you don’t actually have to go into a deep sleep – just resting with your eyes closed, dozing off a bit, is effective too. It may feel contradictory, but the combination of a snooze and a coffee offers big benefits.

Online discussions have people talking about getting up, having a cup of coffee and going back to bed for 20 minutes – they say this helps them have more energy for the rest of the day.

Others swear that having coffee between naps is a thing. If you ask us, anyone who can sandwich in a coffee between two naps has a good life!

How to coffee nap is something else to think about.

First things first: The coffee!

You do need to think about what kind of coffee you will drink. As popular as boozy coffee drinks (like Kahlua Coffee)  are, those aren’t recommended.

This is a pure coffee/nap time – and you just have to pick the right one for you: a shot of espresso, Americano, French Press… whatever works.

 As long as it is caffeinated, you’re good to go.

For the nap itself, you can find a quiet corner in the breakroom or go outside on a sunny day.

You are in great shape if there is a park nearby or maybe a coffee shop with comfy chairs. Put on some dark sunglasses and snooze away.

And for an added bonus, think about carrying a travel pillow with you. It helps!

There are many travel coffee makers out there too, so wherever you are – you can make coffee. And if you are at home, well, life is easy.

  • Find yourself a nice, comfortable place to sit or lay down (be discreet at work!)
  • Make sure you set an alarm so you don’t over-sleep
  • Get ready to be full of energy and ready to rock and roll after your nap!
