A Complete Review Of The Coffee Panda Pour Over Coffee Kit: ALL You Need To Know
A few years ago, pour over coffee was being called a hipster trend. There were those who said it wouldn’t last.
(They may have been the same people who said Twitter was a fad – just sayin’).
I remember my first experience with pour over – it was in a café. As the barista went through the process, I went into a Zen-like trance.
I was there, but floating above my body. I wanted my coffee NOW, but I was also incredibly patient (which is not my normal state of being because … caffeine!)
The coffee was good!
I vowed right then that I would perfect my pour over techniques and make it at home - and I have spent quite a bit of time searching out the right equipment for my beginner’s quest.
Could the Coffee Panda Pour Over Coffee Kit be the answer to my pour over prayers?
The Coffee Panda Pour Over Coffee Kit 'In A Nutshell'
The Coffee Panda Pour Over Coffee Kit
The Coffee Panda kit is perfect for someone who is just getting started with pour over coffee AND for those with experience.
You get almost every tool you need in the kit and that is something unique to this product.
Pour over coffee brings you a much better version of ‘drip-style’ coffee.
You see, drip coffee makers don’t let you decide on the grind (the machine tells you what to do), it doesn’t allow the water to run through the grounds evenly and you can’t control the water temp or do a bit of pre-infusion.
With pour over, you can do all of this - and the result is a cleaner, brighter, more robust cup of coffee.
With a bit of practice, even a beginner can make excellent pour over coffee, banishing those drip coffee complaints forever.
(Not sure you understand why pour over coffee is worth the effort? There are many reasons. Like these.)
It’s stylish, it has safety features so you won’t burn yourself, it has directions (YAY!!), it doesn’t cost a whack of dough – and it offers the ability to grow your pour over skills.
And it comes from a well-respected company that knows their stuff.
It isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty great - especially for a beginner.
Heck, you gotta start somewhere, and the Coffee Panda helps you find your way.
Things to Consider Before Buying
Pour over coffee is a slow, meditative process that must be embraced.
The Coffee Panda isn’t for someone who wants to push a button, walk away, and come back and there sits a mug of coffee. No siree, Bob!
The Panda is for the members of the coffee tribe who want to immerse themselves in this experience and who have a little patience. You can’t rush this process.
The reward: a tantalizing drink that is both complex and delicate.
Along with beginners (who will find this less intimidating than some other pour over coffee makers) the Coffee Panda Pour Over Kit will appeal to coffee fans who will try different grind sizes, water temperatures and pouring techniques.
The simplicity of the pour over opens up a passageway to a deeper understanding and (without sounding too woo-woo) connection with your coffee.
The Coffee Panda Pour Over Review – The Zen Of Coffee Making
Let’s face it, this Coffee Panda Kit is freakin’ awesome.
It is reasonable in price, it comes with everything you need except for coffee beans, a thermometer and a cup – and it is pretty, pretty, pretty.
You can stay simple or you can experiment the hell out of it, and you even get a little handwritten note from the owners of the company.
AND there is a bonus free e-book: "The Home Barista’s Guide to Manual Brewing.”
It is clear that the owners – Amanda and Justin – are the most fabulous human beings ever.
Well, maybe we don’t know that for a fact – but in a world that seems to care increasingly less about quality, they have chosen to care more.
The Kit Makes The Process A Little Easier
Everything you need is in the kit (with maybe the exception of a gooseneck kettle and thermometer – which are a “nice to have,” but not a “need to have”).
This kit – and the e-book that comes with it – makes learning how to make pour over coffee a little bit easier, although it still takes time to get it right for you.
A 30 ml stainless steel coffee mesh filter cone (which is fine enough to stop those tiny unwanted coffee grounds from leaping into your coffee)
A coffee scoop
A sleek, stylish carafe
A heat-proof silicone base (to protect your countertop from heat damage)
An e-book on how to make great pour over
A note from the owners
It Has Smart Safety Features
Hand brewing coffee has its risks – and burns are one of them.
The Coffee Panda Pour Over carafe is fitted with a BPA-free, heat-resistant silicon collar.
This helps with the grip – and protects your hands from touching too-hot glass.
It’s Sleek And Pretty
This carafe is nice to look at. It can sit on a kitchen counter with far more expensive pieces and hold its own.
It looks more expensive than it is.
It’s A Bit Fragile
Like a fine wine glass, the carafe isn’t a thick, utilitarian tool, but it is a delicate piece that requires a bit of TLC.
Advice from fans of the Coffee Panda Pour Over is “Don’t put it in the dishwasher.”
For something that looks good and works well, it seems that a little extra attention like handwashing isn’t such a big price to pay.
The Panda Not Your Thing? You Have Choices, My Friend.
The Chemex Coffee Maker Review
The Chemex is like the great-grandfather of all pour over coffee makers. It’s been around for a stinkin’ long time (since 1941. That’s great-grandpa age, right?).
The Chemex is a more expensive option (about $60) and it isn’t a kit.
It does, however, let you choose between a 3-cup, a 6-cup, an 8-cup or even a 10-cup brewer.
The Coffee Panda is just one size – about 2 cups. The Chemex is worth learning more about – you can do that right here!
The Chemex is a good option, especially for those who have a bit of experience with pour overs.
For beginners, the Coffee Panda is a better choice.
The Hario V60 Review
The Hario dripper may be the most complicated of all pour over coffee makers and this is because of its simplicity.
This may sound confusing but the fact is, the Hario V60 leaves so much up to you that you need to know what you are doing or else it will be a coffee disaster!
Think of it this way.
You know how learning how to drive a standard before you drive an automatic is a good way to understand how a car works?
Using this pour over coffee maker is like first learning how to build the car’s engine!
It shouldn’t be done until you know what you are doing!
But if you do, the Hario V60 is worth it.
If you are a beginner, stick with the Coffee Panda Kit.
Starting at $20, it’s a deal and it comes in a range of materials and colors. And three sizes: 1-2 cups, 1-4 cups or 1-6 cups.
Choice is a good thing. Check it out here.
The Kalita Wave Dripper Review
This is also a great pour over option. It comes in three different models: stainless steel, glass, or ceramic – and it has two different sizes: single cup or 2-3 cups.
Its name comes from the wavy ridges running down its walls.
It is a wide cone that has a flat plate with three small holes at the bottom. A baseplate encircles the cone to allow it to rest over your coffee pot.
This is a relatively easy pour over option – but keep in mind, “easy” when it comes to pour over doesn’t mean it’s a walk in the park.
And simple doesn’t mean it can’t be complex. But – with a little bit of experience, you will get a good cup of coffee.
The Wave Dripper isn’t quite a beginner’s pour over, but with a bit of practice you could ramp up pretty quickly.
For the person just starting out, the Coffee Panda is a better choice.
