How To Make The Most Delicious Dulce de Leche Coffee Ever
If you have never had a Dulce de Leche coffee before, hang on to your hat! You are in for a treat.
And if you have, you know exactly what I am talking about.
Dulce de Leche is a creamy caramel sauce or spread, traditionally made by simmering milk and sugar for several hours.
And bringing it together with coffee is one of the universe’s little miracles.
This version includes Kahlua, so this is typically a late afternoon beverage.
It’s great après-ski or after walking the dog in the cold; it’s also great as an after-dinner beverage. It is delicious, and addictive - be warned!
You will want to make this again and again.
Dulce de Leche Coffee

- 4 cups strong brewed coffee
- 6 oz fluid Dulce de Leche
- 6 tbsp Kahlua
- 1 cup whipping or heavy cream (or store bought whipped cream/whipped topping)
- 2 tbsp sugar
- chocolate for shavings
Make the coffee and keep it hot
Melt the Dulce de Leche and add it to the coffee. Stir until completely dissolved
Combine the whipping cream/heavy cream with the sugar and whip until stiff
Add the Kahlua to the coffee/dulce de leche mix
Pour the mix into each cup. Plop the whipping cream on top and shave the chocolate on top of that

What that really means is: another cup!

You can also make your own. It’s not that difficult, but it can be a little tricky.
So if making your own is a bit much, remember that the quality of what you can purchase online or in your local store is good – and it gets you to the end goal (sipping the deliciousness of this drink) more quickly!

Step # 1. Make the Coffee Hot, Hot, Hot
There is a lot of flavor in Dulce de Leche coffee, but as always – when you start with good coffee, the drink’s quality is markedly better.
This is one of those drinks that gives you free reign to put your signature on the finished product. Just about any coffee brew method will work.
And this is a drink that makes it fun to experiment and try different brews to see what you like best.
For this, an easy approach is to make it with your drip coffee maker, but seriously – any brew will do.
Deciding on which brew method to use might be the most complex part of making this drink.

And for this drink, the coffee should be really hot!
Now, how hot coffee should be is a serious discussion with the people of the coffee tribe.
This is one drink where you need to push a little past your comfort zone and make the coffee HOT (or at least hotter than you would with a pour over or French press).
The heat helps to melt the Dulce de Leche and blend the flavors of the coffee and caramel together.
Step # 2. Add the Dulce de Leche
Add the Dulce de Leche to the coffee and stir until completely dissolved. And keep the coffee hot.
Some people cheat and microwave the coffee with the Dulce de Leche. That’s an iffy step (but you gotta do what you gotta do).
You can also heat water in a saucepan and let the coffee pot sit in that while the Dulce de Leche melts.
It’s a bit of an extra step, but it helps to keep the coffee really hot.
Step 3: Whip the Cream
Combine the whipping cream/heavy cream with the sugar and whip until stiff. You can also use store-bought whipped cream or whipped topping here.
If you make this ahead of time, you can put it in the refrigerator for a few hours until you use it.
But be careful, you might go to grab it and find that someone else in the house used it with the organic strawberries you were going to serve for dessert!
Step 4: Add the Kahlua
Full disclosure here… we add more Kahlua than this recipe calls for.
A lot more.
Whatever your taste, tolerance or tipsy goal, add the Kahlua to the coffee.
You can use other alcohol here – whiskey works, brandy works, rum works. Just see this step as another opportunity to experiment.

Step 5: Bring It All Together
Pour the coffee/Dulce de Leche mix into each cup. Plop that whipping cream on top and shave the chocolate on top of that.
