Your grinder is the most overlooked piece of the puzzle when it comes to brewing great coffee. Without the right coffee grinder, or knowledge about coffee grinding, you'll never come close to brewing that perfect cup of coffee. It's safe to say, its one of your top 3 'most critical' coffee gear purchases.
WAR has been declared. Online, in the coffee forums, that is. The war is over coffee grinders. It’s a bloodbath, with fanatics and scholars digging in deep and hurling poorly spelled, poorly supported opinions at one another.
Burr vs. blade, manual vs. electric, flat burr vs. conical burr; the battleground is vast. Yet amidst all this turmoil, a few nuggets of truth have risen to the surface. The most note-able is that burr grinders are much better than blade grinder. When it comes to tasty coffee, the essential elements are consistency and control, two things a blade grinder is terrible at. So now that we have straightened that out..
We only recommend burr grinders, and we look at both electric and manual options below.
First things first - are you going to choose a manual, or an electric grinder? Here are some guides to help you make the right choice
We take our grinders seriously. We've had sh*tty grinders in the past, and we don't want you to make the same mistake. We don't want you to go through the pain we went through. Before you rush out and buy the first grinder you see, you want to make sure you're confident you're choosing the best coffee grinder for your needs.
Below you'll find reviews and articles related to electric coffee grinders. Electric grinders are - as the name suggests - powered grinders. The most important point that we echo here - again - is that we only look at burr grinders. NOT blade grinders. Blade grinders will ruin your coffee beans. While burr grinders are miles better; they are not all created equal. Some burr grinders have better burrs than other grinders, and some were made for certain grind types (e.g. espresso grinds).

Manual / Hand Grinders
There's nothing like a good hand grinder. The only problem is - there are lots of crappy hand grinders for sale nowadays. The good news is that we've found the best hand grinders and we've found the worst. Its tempting to go for a cheap option, but you end up paying more in the long run as they need to be replaced more often. Not to mention - they make your coffee taste worse!
The beauty of manual grinders is that you can control the speed and this helps you generate less heat while grinding (heat is bad) and also allows you to grind more consistently. It's all part of the morning 'make coffee' ritual that so many of us have come to love. Manual grinders generally come in 2 styles; large, antique style grinders and smaller, portable, travel grinders. We look at the latter - perfect for grinding beans on the go.
