If you’re on a diet, or just trying to eat healthy, there is no need to worry! Coffee in itself contains practically no calories and might actually help boost your metabolism.
However, it all comes down to the way you drink it. Adding flavourings to your coffee often racks up its calorie content.

Calories And Nutrition In Coffee
Coffee is usually drunk for its taste, not its nutritional value. Black coffee contains almost no energy, providing only 1 calorie per 100 grams! Consequently, it doesn’t contain any nutrients like protein or fibre either.
That doesn’t mean coffee has no nutritional value at all. The average cup contains small amounts of antioxidants like chlorogenic acid and essential minerals like magnesium and potassium, which can contribute to your overall well-being.

Coffee Can Boost Your Metabolism
Apart from essential minerals, coffee contains plenty of caffeine. Various studies have shown caffeine to increase thermogenesis and therefore boost fat burning. There is thus no reason to avoid drinking coffee if you want to restrict your calorie intake.

It’s Not The Coffee But What You Add To It
While black coffee contains no calories and is practically a dieter’s best friend, adding milk and sweeteners quickly turns things around. Store bought coffee with additional flavourings tends to be loaded with fat and sugar.
For instance, many of the beverages on the Starbucks’ menu are closer to decadent desserts than coffee. To demonstrate, the “Caffe Mocha Whole Milk Venti” contains 420 calories, while the “Salted Caramel Mocha with Whole Milk Venti” contains a whopping 500 calories. That’s a far cry from zero.
Of course, these examples are quite extreme. A cup of whole milk contains 150 calories; this is roughly what you’re getting when you order a regular-sized latte or cappuccino at most cafés.
Adding sugar also makes a difference. A cube of sugar contains about 10 calories. While it doesn’t seem like much, it adds up. If you count the total of every sugar cube you’ve consumed in the past month or year, it might not seem so insignificant.
How Can I Enjoy Healthier Coffee?
If you like having a large whole-milk cappuccino to treat yourself every once in a while, that’s perfectly fine. I don’t want to be a health nazi and tell you to deprive yourself of the things you enjoy. But like with everything else, moderation is key.
Cut Down On The Extras
If you drink coffee every day and would like to keep it a healthy habit, it’s easy enough to do. Pure black coffee is pretty much calorie-free, so keep it as close to its original form as possible.
If you’re used to having your coffee with lots of milk and several cubes of sugar, try to cut down on the flavorings gradually. Don’t try to switch to espressos straight away - you still want to enjoy your coffee. It takes time for your palate to adjust to black coffee, but you can get there in the end (we teach you how to do it on this article!).
When you drink black coffee, its quality becomes more important, as you are no longer hiding its taste with sweeteners. Experiment with different beans until you discover your favorite.
Given that you’re used to drinking sweetened coffee, you might be more likely to enjoy mellow-bodied coffees that are low in acidity at first.
Opt For Almond Milk Or Alternative Sweeteners
Even if you don’t want to drink your coffee black, there are ways to make it more mellow without adding too many calories.
Some plant milks contain significantly fewer calories than cow milk. Unsweetened almond milk is an especially good alternative, with only 30 calories per cup.
Furthermore, alternative sweeteners have been around for ages, and they can cut down the acidity of coffee without adding calories. Consider using the zero-calorie Stevia for a lighter option. You can also try something like Agave sweetener, which is sweeter than sugar, so you need to use less.
Another change you could make is to reduce your portion sizes. Downsize from large cappuccinos to smaller ones and you can halve the calories. It’s not rocket science!
How Many Calories Does Coffee Have? - Not Many!
