  • refrigerator

  2. Add the grounded coffee and the coconut water to your coffee maker

  3. Leave the coffee to brew on your worktop for about 12 hours. You can put it in the refrigerator

Benefits of Cold Brew

Using the cold brew method to make your coffee results in a cup that is less acidic. When you use hot water, it pulls oils from the beans that are full of acids; in fact hot brewed coffee can be 67% more acidic than cold brew.

Less acid also means a different flavor.

Cold brew coffee has a milder, purer coffee flavor.

It’s also better for your teeth and your digestion. Along with that, it still gives you all the health benefits of drinking a hot cup of Joe.

This includes benefits such as reducing your risk of Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and dementia and lowering your chances of heart disease and stroke.

It also helps your body burn more fat, and is packed with antioxidants - it’s just less acidic!

Benefits of Coconut Water

If you haven’t heard of coconut water before, it is the liquid that you find inside young coconuts. As time goes by, it solidifies and turns into coconut flesh.

It has a sweet, slightly nutty flavor and is very hydrating.

It’s become a popular ingredient in recent years because it has lots of great health benefits such as:

  • High fibre content
  • A good source of minerals such as Magnesium, Manganese and Potassium
  • A good source of antioxidants
  • May improve blood sugar control and protect against diabetes
  • May help prevent kidney stones
  • May help lower cholesterol
  • May help lower blood pressure
  • Helps restore electrolyte balance after exercise

So, if you make a drink with coffee and coconut water? It’s going to be a super hydrating, stimulating and healthy drink that taste delicious.

How To Make a Hydrating Iced Coffee

Now that you've gathered your ingredients, it's time to make it! Follow these easy steps to get that hydrating iced coffee.

Step 1 - Grind your coffee

If you grind your own, measure out the right amount of beans (usually around ¾ cups of beans for 4 cups of water) and place them in your grinder.

You want to use a coarse grind, because the coffee is going to brew for a lot longer than a regular cup.

Alternative: You can of course use pre-ground coffee. If you don’t have either (and if not, why are you here?) then you can make iced coffee using coffee extract or even (shudder) instant.

Step 2 - Cold brew

You can make cold brew in any container.

All you need is something to hold the ground coffee and water, and something to filter it out with when you’re finished.

You can also use a French Press to make cold brew - just leave the plunger up until the brew is done.

Add your coffee, and then add the coconut water.

Depending on the brand, there may be some coconut flesh in with the drink. If you leave it in, it will give a stronger coconut flavor. If you would prefer to avoid that, then filter it out.

Where to find coconut water: If you haven’t spotted coconut water at your grocery store, it’s normally found in the chiller.

It comes in cartons, but you can also find a long-life version in cans.

If your grocery store doesn’t have the hipster credentials to carry it, try your nearest health-food store.

Once you’ve added the coconut water, leave it to brew.

PRO TIP: If you like a more acidic flavor, then you could start your cold brew off with a hot bloom. Moisten your ground coffee with boiling water to extract the oils, then top up with the cold, coconut water.

Step 3 - Wait

You can leave the coffee to brew on your worktop for about 12 hours. If you’re worried about bacteria growing in your brew, or if you want to leave it longer than that, put it in the refrigerator.

Step 4 - Enjoy!

Pour your cold brew into a serving vessel.

You might prefer to water it down a little, or to add creamer. It’s great over ice, and makes the perfect fodder for a morning Instagram post.

You could even go the whole hog and add whipped cream, an upturned ice-cream cone and rainbow sprinkles to make a unicorn iced coffee!
