The Oomph Coffee Maker Review
Aesthetic Appeal – 4/5
Although it lacks the elegance of manual pour overs such as the Kalita Wave or the iconic Chemex, the Oomph Portable Coffee Maker showcases a unique design that makes it look more like a stylish travel mug than a coffee maker.
You don’t place it above a mug: rather you brew within it and drink from the Oomph itself, which is its main difference from the AeroPress.
It’s also available in different colors, so you are definitely spoilt for choice.
Ease of Use – 5/5
The Oomph Coffee Maker is incredibly easy to use: you must simply add the ground coffee, pour some hot water, let it brew for a couple of minutes and press the plunger. That’s it! No agitation nor paper filters needed.
Inspired by espresso machines, it turns your hand power and pressure into brewing force, pulling flavor from the ground coffee rather than “stewing” it like a French press. Made of impact-resistant tritan, it’s also dishwasher safe, making the cleaning process painless and quick.
Custom Brewing Features – 4/5
The Oomph Coffee maker gives you full control over the extraction process and strength. First of all, it works with different grind sizes thanks to the mesh filter and the Intelligent Grind Correction which compensates for grind differences (1).
It also tends to give you a very clean cup and there’s a lot of clarity in the cup as well, so you can really pick up the individual flavor notes in the coffee.
It’s built with a patented multi-chamber design that ensures no over-extraction thanks to the anti-bitterness lock: once you push down the plunger, the used coffee grounds and the brewed coffee are kept in separate chambers (2).
You can brew 14 oz of filter coffee and achieve a perfect extraction in less than 2 minutes, obtaining a smooth and well-rounded taste.
However, if you change your mind and think that your brewed coffee is not as strong bodied as you wish, the Oomph offers an innovative rebrew option: just unlock it and pull up the outer sleeve to brew it again!
It only loses a point because, unlike the AeroPress, it doesn’t allow you to brew espresso (or something like espresso), but when it comes to drip coffee you’ll have complete control over your great-tasting brew.
Portability – 5/5
Launched on Kickstarter, this all-in-one coffee maker is designed to be light, small and even more portable than a classic French press: you don’t even need to carry a mug! You can brew and drink directly from your Oomph Portable Coffee Maker thanks to the built-in travel mug, which makes it perfect for commuters or coffeeholics who are often in a rush.
Value for Money – 4.5/5
The Oomph is a great budget option, as it’s a very good value for the money. It obviously doesn’t require electricity and, thanks to the stainless steel filter designed to last, not even paper filters, meaning that you only pay for it once and it’s reusable. This also makes it a green and eco-friendly single-serve coffee maker, much better than those that rely on plastic coffee capsules (3). If you somehow end up grabbing a takeaway brew from a coffee shop on the way to work pretty much every day because you never have time to enjoy one at home, the Oomph will save you lots of money in the long run.
Things we liked:
- All-in-one design with mug included
- Anti-bitterness lock avoids over-extraction
- Brews in only 2 minutes
Things we didn’t like:
- Heavier than a typical travel mug
- Doesn’t keep the coffee hot for long
Don’t buy the Oomph if…
You want hot coffee all day long – LIke The Oomph, the CoffeeGator thermal travel cup is a compact, on-the-go brewer with a built-in mug. But unlike the Oomph, CoffeeGator’s mug is made from vacuum-layered stainless steel, so it will keep coffee piping hot for up to 6 hours!
You don’t need the built-in mug – If you drink your coffee from a favorite ceramic mug, you’ll be just as happy with the AeroPress, an incredibly portable coffee maker popular amongst holidaymakers and campers. For all the details, check out our full review of the Aeropress.
You like to savor the brewing process – If you want a portable brewer but also relish learning the craft of a perfect pour over brew, take a look at the Kalita Wave. This iconic pour over coffee maker is small and light enough for travel while still requiring some finesse to master.
You value convenience above all else – It’s hard to beat a pod coffee brewer when it comes to convenience, and the Keurig K55 is an affordable single-serve coffee maker that brews consistently good coffee from K-cups. This machine is quick and reliable, especially on busy mornings.
You prefer espresso to coffee – If The Oomph’s filter coffee doesn’t quite provide the jolt you’re looking for, consider the Nespresso Pixie instead. This aesthetically-pleasing single-cup coffee machine is fast, easy to use, and makes great espresso. Learn more about this coffee maker here.
Thanks to its practicality, speed and innovative design, the Oomph is one of our favorite single serve coffee makers. Giving you a full-bodied cup of smooth coffee in 2 minutes and keeping it warm in its travel-mug body, it’s the best choice for commuters and filter coffee enthusiasts who happen to always be in a rush and would rather enjoy their caffeinated oomph of energy (pun intended) on the go.
Important Note: The Oomph is currently out of stock as the company deals with the Covid-19 crisis.
To clean the Oomph coffee maker, you must first discard any leftover liquid, twist the plunger up and lift it slightly before plunging down again (this helps dry the remaining coffee grounds). Then remove the plunger and discard the grounds. Add some water, place the plunger back onto the coffee maker’s body and keep plunging up and down for around 10 seconds to clean the filter before removing the plunger and emptying the dirty water.
Yes, the Oomph coffee maker is made of Tritan, which is a BPA free plastic.
The best travel coffee maker is the AeroPress thanks to its light weight, portability, and versatility, since it allows you to brew espresso as well as filter coffee. The Oomph is also a great alternative, but you can find more portable coffee machines in our best travel coffee makers review roundup.
