The Rocket R 60V Review: Is This Espresso Machine A Good Fit For You?
The Rocket R 60V is majestic.
It brings the beautiful, sleek look and functionality of a professional machine into your kitchen.
It requires serious coin, but for the “I need to drink kick-ass espresso in my own kitchen” people, you can’t get much better than this – unless you go pro.
So many mornings, I dream of a great shot of espresso to start the day – this beauty delivers that.
The R 60V 'in A Nutshell'
The Rocket Rv60 Coffee Maker
It has Wi-Fi and you can control it with an app – there isn’t anything else on the market like that.
It offers pressure profiling options, it’s quiet, and it has some new safety features like automatic shut off.
It’s a big machine that needs its own space, but it’s going to look great wherever you put it.
It’s not an easy-to-use machine by any stretch of the imagination, but after the learning curve is over and you have perfected the pour to meet your preferences – it will all feel worth it.
Things to Consider Before Buying a Rocket Espresso Machine
When you are buying a machine in this league, you want to make sure that it’s a match made in heaven. With the exception of movie stars, music moguls and bitcoin investors, this is a big deal spend.
It’s not for the newly obsessed home coffee hobbyist.
This baby needs mad espresso skills and someone who is willing to invest the money and the effort into getting it right.
It’s A Complicated Commitment
This is the only Rocket model with pressure profiling (the ability to design and customize your espresso shot).
Unless you have the skills of an award-winning barista, it is going to take some effort to coax this magnificent beast and your espresso-making skills to live up to their potential.
There is a learning curve and it will take serious trial and error to get it right.
But think about when you do – that’s where the magic lies.
The Rocket espresso r 60V Takes Up A Lot Of Space
The Rocket R60v needs space. It’s a larger machine and it will overwhelm a small kitchen. It is beautiful – and comes in stainless steel or black – so it will be a feature focus in any space.
It’s All ‘Teched’ Up
This is a state-of-the-art machine.
It has built-in Wi-Fi, serious programmable functions (including a language setting – it can speak the language of its homeland – Italy!), and can be operated through apps.
As much as we love this… technology brings its own set of issues.
And not everyone is tech-savvy.
The Review – Rocket espresso r 60V
It’s hard not to go overboard when talking about the Espresso R 60V.
It is sleek and sexy and so complex in what it can achieve.
It also doesn’t hurt that it would make your friends green with envy.
(Although I should warn you, if you have one of these, it’s amazing how they all start randomly dropping by.)
Hand-built in Milan, Italy, it is a stainless steel work of art. (You can also get it in black; I prefer the shine of the stainless steel.)
Seriously, you just want to sit and stare at it – until you remember that you can make a spectacularly good espresso with it.
This is a machine for someone with experience.
If you aren’t serious about your coffee and don’t have years invested in this passion, this isn’t for you.
Pressure profiling is a highlight of the R 60V – and it is a feature that is typically only found on professional machines. It uplevels the coffee extraction substantially.
You can split the extraction into five different time levels, with each having a different pressure to be programmed.
This means that you can ramp up or ramp down pump pressure, depending on the coffee type and your flavor objectives.
At the very start of brewing, during the first few seconds, the coffee is exposed to low-pressure water – this is called pre-infusion.
The R 60V has a mechanical pre-infusion system. This provides smooth extraction, resulting in exceptional body and crema.
It’s Very Smart
The R 60V can be controlled with an app; all you need is Wi-Fi. Programmable features include:
- Adjust both boiler temperatures
- Turn the service boiler off
- Switch between water reservoir or direct-lined plumbing
- Configure 3 separate pressure profiles
You can also use the external controller that comes with it, if the Wi-Fi goes down.
You Can Make Coffee And Steam Milk At The Same Time
There are separate boilers for espresso production and steam.
And you can do both simultaneously, while controlling the temperature of each boiler.
This increases efficiency and extends the life of the machine. The only question you have now is do you want steamed milk or foam?
It’s Quiet And Can Be Hooked Up To Your Water Main
A quiet, commercial-grade pump allows for effective and flexible pressure profiling.
“Quiet” is the important word here.
Most machines contain a vibratory pump, which makes them noisy. This beauty is quiet.
You can run the Rocket as a pour-over machine, using the included 2.5 liter water tank, or you can have it directly plumbed into your water main.
It’s Durable And Stylish
The Rocket R 60V is housed in a durable and stylish AISI 304 stainless steel case.
You Won’t Run Out Of Steam
Warming up both boilers happens quickly because they have 1400 W heating elements. This means that you never have to worry about running out of steam for your lattes, cappuccinos and flat whites.
It comes with no-burn steam and hot water wands that can be used without worrying about scalding, and if something is wrong, this smart machine senses it and turns itself off.
Safety is a welcome feature with an appliance.
It’s Got Everything You Need
It comes with two portafilters, a PID, an aluminum tamper, a blind basket, brush, scoop, cleaning cloth and a set of manuals.
Made In Italy
Let’s face it – Italians know how to make espresso machines. And this is a work of art.
Sleek, shiny and it makes exceptional espresso.
The R 60V goes beyond being an appliance – it is a showpiece. And they don’t make a huge amount of these.
It comes with a serial number on it, reminding you of how exclusive a club you belong to.
Not Sold On The Rocket R 60V?
This sleek, as close to professional as you can get at home machine, isn’t for everyone – especially with its price tag. If you are still on the fence about this, there are some options.
Check out these two solid alternatives if the R 60V isn’t for you.
Option 1: The Rocket R58
The Rocket R58 is a really sweet machine.
If you want to know what the deal is between the rocket R 60V vs. R58, there are several differences to consider.
Price & Popularity
The R58 is more popular than the R 60V – which might be because of the price difference of about $1500.
There are some great features similar to the R 60V, such as a dual boiler, consistency of the steam pressure – which can translate into that smooth milk texture that takes a latte over the top – and it’s quiet.
You can also plumb the R58 into your water source, which is a nice touch.
Bells and whistles
The R58 doesn’t have as many bells and whistles. It doesn’t have Wi-FI, it only comes in one colour (stainless steel), the boiler material is copper instead of stainless steel, and there is no safety auto shut off.
In a price comparison, the rocket R58 is good deal.
Option 2: Vesuvius
To properly compare the Rocket R 60V vs the Vesuvius, you have to get deep into the details to really see a difference.
The Vesuvius is also made in Italy and is a pressure-profiling, dual-boiler espresso machine.
Cost is close, with the Vesuvius coming in a bit higher (around $6,000).
The differences between the two are both aesthetic and functional.
Aesthetics on point
The Vesuvius has a built-in digital control pad, where the R 60V’s is a stand-alone and can be put out of sight. The Vesuvius only comes in stainless, where the R 60V also comes in black.
Functional as all hell
The functional differences include that the Rocket R 60V has built-in Wi-Fi and that pretty snazzy rocket R 60V app.
No such luck with the Vesuvius.
You can have three pressure profiles with five pressure settings on each with the R 60V; with the Vesuvius you get five pressure profiles with seven pressure settings on each.
Overall, it seems that deciding between the Rocket R 60V and the Vesuvius would come down to personal preference and a commitment to the craft of coffee making.
For me, the idea of an app and Wi-Fi is pretty appealing.
You can check out more of this here.
For the dedicated espresso enthusiast with a solid budget to spend, the Rocket R 60V offers everything you would need – and more – in a prosumer machine.
Not only is it smart (Wi-Fi and an app!), but you also have three pressure profiles with five pressure settings – and it’s got the added safety feature of the automatic shut off.
It’s an incredible machine, if the price isn’t a barrier.
If you are looking to create award-winning espresso at home, this is the machine that can take you there.
