Bonavita BV1900TS Review: Is this 8-Cup Coffee Maker Worth It?
If you’ve been looking for a new coffee maker, the Bonavita BV1900TS might have popped up in your search results. Or perhaps a friend has recommended it?
Either way, it appears that it’s caught your attention. So it did ours, and we decided to test it at your pleasure. Keep reading to see if it’s the right choice for you.
Bonavita BV1900TS Coffee Maker
Powerful and precise 1500-watt heater maintains optimal brewing temperature of 195°-205°F (91°-96°C)– Bonavita
Bonavita designed this drip coffee maker to mimic the artisan pour-over brewing method. It has also been tested and certified by the Specialty Coffee Association Of America as meeting their Golden Cup standards. So we’re expecting great results from this machine.
Design – 3.5/5
The Bonavita BV1900TS has a classic drip coffee maker design. The transparent water tank is stacked on a brushed stainless steel encased body. The black-coloured, BPA-free plastic filter basket sits on top of the stainless steel carafe.
Measuring 31.5 x 17.3 x 31 cm, it is a compact, unassuming little coffee maker. It is not a statement piece, unlike some other SCAA certified coffee makers. But don’t let its plain-jane aesthetics fool you — it makes a great cup of coffee.
Features – 4/5
This 8-cup (1.2-litre) Bonavita coffee brewer comes with a powerful 1500W heater that maintains optimal brewing temperature of 195° – 205°F (91° – 96°C). The hot water is distributed evenly over the coffee grounds through the shower head style lid, which facilitates an even saturation and extraction (1).
Our favourite feature, though, is its Pre-infusion mode.
You can engage it by holding down the power button for 5 seconds. In this mode, a small quantity of hot water will drip onto the coffee grounds, allowing them a few seconds to bloom before beginning the brewing process. The SCAA seems to really like this feature, too (2):
“This new, key feature addresses Bonavita’s interest in helping consumers understand the importance of using fresh coffee, ground just before brewing.”
The thermally-insulated stainless steel carafe will ensure that your coffee stays hot for up to two hours, much longer than glass carafes. Just be sure to remove the brew basket and screw on the carafe lid after brewing.
That’s one downside of this drip coffee machine — the brew basket sits directly on the carafe. This means that you can’t pause the machine in the middle of the brew cycle. You have to let the machine finish the entire brewing process before you can enjoy your coffee. It also doesn’t have an auto-start function, so you have to switch it on manually whenever you want to brew coffee.
Ease Of Use – 4.5/5
Using this Bonavita drip coffee machine is as simple as it gets. Put a standard flat-bottom paper filter into the brew basket, load it up with ground coffee, top-off the water tank, and hit the power button.
With the press of a single button, the Bonavita BV1900TS brews a full pot of delicious coffee in about 6 minutes. As described on Sprudge (3):
“It is a workhorse without bells and whistles, brewing a consistent cup of daily coffee while taking up minimal counter space.”
You might need to get used to the blinking light that indicates the correct activation of the pre-infusion mode. Otherwise, our only complaint is that there is no audible beep to signal that the brewing process is over.
Regular cleaning and maintenance of this machine should be a cinch as it doesn’t have a lot of parts.
The shower head, removable filter basket, carafe lid, and the brewer lid are all top-rack dishwasher-safe.
Only the carafe will need to be cleaned manually, and the machine itself will need to be descaled occasionally.
Value For Money – 4.5/5
The Bonavita BV1900TS is not the cheapest drip coffee maker on the market. However, it is the least expensive of all the SCA-certified home coffee brewers (4). That in itself is a stamp of approval for the high-quality coffee you get from this machine.
It comes with some nifty features like the shower head style lid and the pre-infusion mode, which can significantly enhance the quality of your brewed coffee. Add to that its handy 2-year-warranty, and you’re looking at the best value for money drip coffee maker you can buy.
You want to wake up to the smell of coffee. – Are you used to programming your coffee machine to brew a fresh pot just before you wake up? Then this Bonavita coffee maker is not for you. Lucky for you, Bonavita also makes an 8-Cup Programmable Coffee Maker, which has an auto-on feature. You can also check out the Breville Precision coffee brewer (which has unparalleled programmability), and the Oxo On Barista Brain coffee maker (which offers pour-over style brews at the touch of a button). Both, the Breville and the Oxo, have an auto-on timer and are SCAA-certified too.
You don’t have much of a budget. – We believe that this Bonavita coffee brewer offers excellent value for money. But not everyone can realistically afford to pay close to £300 for a drip coffee machine. Some cheaper but still quite good electric coffee makers that might be right for you are the Hamilton Beach 49980A or the Cuisinart DCC3200.
You want the absolute best drip coffee maker. – If you want the best drip coffee machine that money can buy, we recommend the Technivorm Moccamaster. There’s just one button, but every time you press it, you’ll be rewarded with the best drip coffee you’ve ever tasted. You can also consider some of the best drip machines in our list.
You want a coffee maker with grinder. – The simplest way to elevate your home brewing game is to grind your coffee beans right before brewing. If you’re looking to buy a new coffee maker and want to see what difference freshly ground beans can make, consider getting one with a grinder. Read our article on the best coffee makers with a grinder built in to see which one best suits your needs.
We’re confident that features such as the shower head style lid, the stainless steel carafe, and the pre-infusion mode make the Bonavita BV1900TS 8-Cup Coffee Maker an excellent buy for all coffee lovers. Even if you aren’t particular about the taste of your coffee, this drip coffee maker will pleasantly surprise you.
However, if you purchase freshly roasted coffee and grind them before brewing, you will truly appreciate this machine’s brewing capabilities. But it can be hard to brew large batches of coffee manually, and most drip coffee machines will just burn your craft coffee beans. The Bonavita BV1900TS is the solution to those days when all you want to do is flip a button and enjoy a full pot of delicious brewed coffee.
