Churros are amazing – warm, doughy, with just the right amount of cinnamon sugar. But they aren’t easy to make at home. You need pastry bags, patience, and plenty of oil. So let’s make the next best thing, a churroccino. We’ve combined two classics but added a twist to make it better than anything you’d find at a motorway services.

How to Make A Churroccino

A churroccino is a variation of the cinnamon coffee first devised by 7-Eleven, but our homemade version is even better (1). You’ll start by making a classic cappuccino enhanced with cinnamon sugar. Then you’ll top it off with a simple Bavarian cream and, should the mood strike, even more cinnamon sugar.

The Churroccino may not be an authentic Italian classic, but this delicious drink deserves a spot on the list of popular coffee beverages around the world.

1. Make the Cinnamon Sugar

In a small bowl, combine ½ cup of granulated sugar with 2 tablespoons of cinnamon and stir until well incorporated.

Pro Tip: Feel free to substitute 2 tablespoons of apple pie or pumpkin pie spice for some added depth.

2. Make the Bavarian Cream

Combine one 100 g package of instant vanilla pudding mix and 1-½ cups of heavy whipping cream in a mixing bowl or stand mixer. Whip the mixture until it’s light and fluffy.

Pro Tip: If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can use a hand mixer, French press, or basket cage whisk.

3. Warm the Mug and Pull A Double Espresso

Before you start, pre-heat a 475 ml mug using boiling water, the cup warmer of your espresso machine, or the plate warming option on your dishwasher.

Grind and dose 18 grams of medium roast coffee beans into a portafilter basket. Tamp, polish, and insert the portafilter into the machine.

Pull a double espresso into the mug and gently stir in 2 to 3 teaspoons of cinnamon sugar. Set the mug on a cup warmer, if you have one, or cover your mug to keep the mixture from cooling.

Pro Tip: If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can use an Aeropress with an attachment—like the Fellow Prismo or Joepresso—or just brew an extra-strong coffee.

4. Froth the Milk

In a milk frothing jug, stretch and texture 120 ml of cold whole milk. Since we’re making a cappuccino, aim to create a thick, airy layer of microfoam.

Pro Tip: If you don’t have a steam wand, you can froth milk with a French press. Add 120 ml of 70-degree milk to the French press and plunge vigorously up and down to incorporate air.

5. Assemble the Churroccino

Pour the frothed milk over the cinnamon sugar espresso. Hold the milk jug 3-4 inches above the mug and pour in a circular pattern. Scoop the remaining foam over the steamed milk. Top the churroccino with a dollop or two of Bavarian cream and extra sprinkle of cinnamon sugar. Enjoy!
