The Eureka Mignon Crono Coffee Grinder Review
Intermediate coffee lovers, rejoice! The Eureka Mignon Crono builds upon the entry-level Eureka Mignon Filtro with its additions of a one-touch grinding system and a built-in timer.
Eureka’s prosumer-level coffee grinders, particularly the Mignon Crono, are hand-built with care by coffee lovers in Italy from the cities of Florence to Milan. Out of all of the coffee grinders from Eureka, the Eureka Mignon line is specifically designed for slow-brewing methods, including AeroPress, Cold Brew, Drip, French Press, and Pour-Over.
As exciting as the name suggests, does the Eureka Mignon Crono coffee grinder do its job to appease eager coffee lovers with a Eureka-invoking brew? Is it right for you? Let’s find out by looking at the details of this coffee grinder’s design, durability, ease of use, grinding capability, and value for your money to see if it’s worth it for your needs and personal preferences.
Design – 3.5/5
Eureka Mignon coffee grinders are instantly recognizable for their unique cube-like hopper and unique square aesthetic. These grinders are practical and serve your coffee grinds with a one-of-a-kind iconic Italian look that you won’t get from any other coffee grinder offering on the market.
The Eureka Mignon Crono coffee grinder has a sleek and sturdy machine-grade design that is built to last. It measures 19 x 12 x 35 cm and weighs 5.6 kilograms. The capacity of the bean hopper is 300 g. While the machine’s body is available in black and white, the hopper it comes with has a nice smoked grey hue to it. An attachable plastic catch container for your coffee grounds is also included rather than a portafilter holder.
This container is easily replaceable with a Pour-Over coffee basket or a French Press Carafe, depending on your slow brew method of choice.
There is a level of noise that comes with using this coffee grinder. Still, it’s not loud enough to wake anyone up in your house as you prepare your morning brew. As long as they don’t sleep too close to the kitchen. Because other Eureka coffee grinders have noise-dampening technology and this one forgoes the use of it, we took off half of a point.
This grinder, unlike other Eureka ones, has no touch display. It will get the job done, but only as long as you know what you’re doing. For that, this coffee grinder loses one point in our ranking.
Durability – 5/5
The Eureka name guarantees durability for all of their coffee grinder offerings. This brand uses decades of engineering experience to craft commercial and home grinders, and the casing and integral internal components are made of high-quality metal.
Eureka Mignon Crono is no exception, and it is made out of a sturdy aluminium metal casing. This coffee grinder is built to last, reliable in construction as it is consistent in its grind.
Ease Of Use – 4/5
The ease of use of the Eureka Mignon Crono coffee grinder depends on your skillset as a home barista. Using this coffee grinder is not as intuitive as entry-level users may hope. You must first experiment with finding the grind setting you’re looking for and accurately adjust the potentiometer-style timer to match the time dosage needed, which is challenging.
The bottom burr is adjustable with precise micro-adjustments via a stepless adjust system from a fine Turkish-style ground to a greater coarseness fitting for a French Press. Over time with practice, it’ll become second nature, and you’ll be able to craft espressos your way. But because of this initial steep learning curve for beginners, we took off one point for the inconvenience.
When it comes to the cleaning and maintenance of this coffee grinder, however, the Eureka Mignon Crono fits the bill for the most optimal way to remove and rinse out the coffee grinds.
Some grinders . . . have a detachable top burr which allows the grind setting to remain intact during removal and cleaning.
Lo and behold, this grinder is completely disassemblable by taking the top burr off without losing your preset desired grind setting (1). This saves you time so you don’t have to recreate your ideal grind as the consistency for your carefully curated batch brews always remains intact (2).
Grinding Capability – 4/5
The Eureka Mignon Crono coffee grinder has 50 mm flat hardened steel burrs. These are capable of grinding coffee beans quickly, evenly, and consistently at a high quality comparable to commercial-grade grinders in various ground particle sizes (3).
The great hopper capacity is optimal for large-batch brewing. A small gate valve is available to remove the hopper and save the beans that have not yet been ground if you accidentally put in too much or want to grind fewer of them.
The presence of a catch bin indicates this premium coffee grinder is more suited to coffee grinding rather than finer grinds for espresso-based drinks. So, if you like espressos, this grinder is unfortunately not for you. As such, Eureka Mignon Crono loses one point.
Value For Money – 5/5
This Eureka Mignon Crono coffee grinder is the budget-friendly pick of the Eureka lot. It can save the most money with its built-in timer with a grinding range between 5 and 60 seconds, a lack of programmability, and no elaborate touchscreen display. Its timer ensures that the grinder will keep grinding until the timer runs out.
You cannot manually stop the grinder and have to set the timer correctly initially. In an emergency, hit the power switch to interrupt.
If it seems too intimidating to precisely time the coffee grinder, you can press and hold the grinding switch for as long as you need to grind your coffee beans manually. However, Eureka does not recommend this manual method.
For any high-quality brew, you need a grinder and brewing method of a comparable calibre. You also need to consider whether you prefer coffee, espresso-based beverages, or both. Also, how comfortable are you with being hands-on with using home barista equipment? How much you’re willing to spend, how much you drink, and how much noise you’re willing to do.
Things we liked:
- Ideal for switching between slow brew methods of choice.
- Best budget-friendly option.
- Best for batch brews.
Things we didn’t like:
- Not ideal for finer espresso grinds.
- No noise-dampening technology.
- No LCD touchscreen display.
Do Not Buy If…
- You’re an espresso lover – For a comparable Italian-made espresso-focused Eureka coffee grinder, look no further than the Eureka Mignon Specialita. It features a similar aesthetic to the Eureka Mignon Crono, but with the added user-friendly bonus of an easy-to-use programmable touchscreen display for hands-free grinding and two timed dosages. It’s even noted to be beginner-friendly for espresso enthusiasts just starting out. Guaranteed to match any kitchen aesthetic, the Eureka Mignon Specialista comes in all sorts of colours, from fancier offerings such as lime green, pink gold, and Tiffany blue to more standard classic options like black and red.
Other comparable espresso-focused grinders include the Eureka Atom 75, the Kafatek Monolith, the Mazzer Mini, and the Fiorenzato F4E V2. Look at some of the prosumer-level coffee grinders we’ve reviewed for even more detailed options.
- You need quiet coffee time – Coffee is the most crucial time of the day. You know this. The Eureka Mignon Crono is great, but you have to admit that its lack of noise-dampening technology puts a real damper on the chances of a quiet meditative morning with a nice cup of coffee. Try the Eureka Mignon Brew Pro for something a little quieter, better, and bluer. It grinds without any noise with its 55 mm flat hardened steel burrs and works in the same adjustable stepless micrometric way of precise grinding as the Eureka Mignon Crono but with a light-up touchscreen display. If you have the extra cash, we recommend checking this one out.
The Verdict
Suppose you’re an established home barista looking for a quality electric coffee grinder on a budget, capable of batch-brewing in various slow-brew methods. In that case, the Eureka Mignon Crono is for you.
If you’re just starting, this is not a grinder for you. If you need a more user-friendly experience with an LCD touchscreen display, we recommend you look for something else.
