The Fellow Stagg Electric Kettle Review

The Fellow Stagg EKG comes from a company known for making gorgeous coffee brewers and accessories. That makes us wonder if this gooseneck kettle puts form before function. Or will it actually help us brew a knock-out cup of pour over coffee? It did well when compared against other pour over kettles. But lets break it down and really put it to the test.

Design – 5/5

When it comes to aesthetics, we believe that the Fellow Stagg EKG has no rivals. Well, except for this new Hario kettle, which has a similarly sleek design. Rather than going for a traditional kettle look, the company opted for a minimalistic (dare we say hipster?) approach. If, as they say, black goes with everything, a matte black finish makes everything better. This model is also available in white, copper or, if you prefer a slightly more traditional look — mirror polished steel.

All models feature a high-grade 304 stainless steel interior and a BPA-free plastic handle that’s very different from other kettles (some love it, some hate it… either way, it’s an interesting design!).

This kettle has a capacity of 900 ml (30-oz), but you can only fill up 600 ml of water in it. At least, the 360-degree swivel cordless base makes it extremely portable and easy to use.

While its first model required stovetop heating, the Fellow Stagg is now an electric kettle thanks to Kickstarter (1). Unlike normal kettles or more basic gooseneck models, the Fellow Stagg EKG is designed to give you the best pour-over experience by allowing you to reach the desired temperature without overboiling the water or having to wait for it to cool down slightly. Thanks to the variable temperature control, you can choose between 57°C and 100°C (or 135 and 212° F), since the base features a switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius). Not only does it include the ideal temperature range for coffee brewing, but it goes well above and below it, meaning that it will also allow you to heat water for any type of tea. (3)

The elegant and intuitive LCD screen shows you both the desired Setpoint Temperature and the Real Time Temperature, letting you follow the process through a lighting element. And if you’re in a hurry to heat water, the Fellow Stagg EKG kettle’s 1200W power, will get the water up to temperature in minutes.

If you’re not immediately ready to start your coffee brewing ritual or you want to be able to make a second coffee after a few minutes, it won’t be a problem. The Hold feature can maintain your water hot for up to an hour, even if you remove the kettle from its stand and place it back.

And if you truly want to geek out, you can always choose the EKG+ model with Bluetooth connectivity to the Acaia Brewbar App. (4) Not only will you be able to use it to set the temperature and have it read it out loud to you, but you can also log and potentially share every step of the process into a master recipe.

Performance – 4.5/5

The Fellow Stagg EKG kettle wasn’t only designed to be incredibly quirky, but also to ensure an optimal flow rate and allow you full control over the agitation process of your brew. The narrow diameter of the spout guarantees precise drip accuracy without drip return. While it’s incredible at slow pours, it doesn’t pour too fast, so it might take a while to fill up a Chemex. We think it works best with smaller coffee makers such as the Kalita Wave and the Hario.

The precision of the gooseneck, combined with the counterbalanced handle ensures a perfect pour. No wonder it’s fast becoming a favourite with baristas across the world!

The only problem of the handle is that it joins the body through a small stainless steel bridge that gets pretty hot, so we recommend being careful when handling it.

Value For Money – 3.5/5

The Fellow Stagg EKG is not just a kettle: it’s a proud representation of your inner barista. It’s undoubtedly pricier than other gooseneck kettles, but it also offers unmatched precision and lots of exciting features.

While most of the competition manufactures their kettles in China to cut costs, the Fellow Stagg is proudly designed and built in California, which we think justifies the higher price tag. They also offer a 1-year warranty on all their kettles, as well as a return/exchange policy for unused products within 30 days of purchase. If you’re as much in love with this kettle as we are, we’d totally understand if you were to pick it up right now.

Do Not Buy The Fellow Stagg Electric Kettle If…

You’re a budget seeker and proud of it – If you’re happy to sacrifice the unique design and some handy features in exchange for a lower price tag but would never give up the temperature control (we respect that!), then we recommend the Bonavita Electric Kettle.
