How To Make Vegan Thai Iced Coffee
Thai iced coffee is one of those delicious treats that we know aren’t really good for us, but we still crave them.
If you haven’t had one before, Thai iced coffee is sweet, spiced with cinnamon and cardamom and made with condensed milk for that thick mouthfeel and sweet flavour.
But what about those of us who are looking for a healthier option? Can you get the satisfaction of a Thai iced coffee without bundles of sugar?

The Health Benefits of Vegan Thai Iced Coffee
This recipe isn’t just defined by the sugar and dairy that’s been left out of it. The ingredients all come together to produce a drink that tastes great and has bundles of health benefits as well.
- Cashew Milk is rapidly becoming the most popular choice for plant-based milks. The reason being, it has a taste and texture profile that is most similar to cow’s milk. At only 25 calories a cup, it helps those who are watching their intake, and it contains healthy fats, calcium and vitamins too.
- Cardamom is used extensively in Indian cooking for its perfumed flavour, particularly in chai tea. It’s also packed with health benefits including preventing GI diseases, being antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic. It helps circulation and protects against heart disease; and it helps with asthma too!
- Cinnamon is another spice with an impressive array of health boosting properties (1), along with being sweet and delicious. It helps regulate blood sugar, and is the world’s number 1 most powerful antioxidant. It helps protect against dementia and improve brain function, and it may even protect against certain cancers.
- Nutmeg is perhaps best known for being grated over eggnog or pumpkin pie. But this spice also helps brain function. Along with that, it has other benefits (2), including freshening the breath, helping indigestion and helping your liver and kidneys flush out toxins.
- Coconut Sugar brings a delicious sweetness to recipes without causing your blood sugar to spike. It’s also a low fructose sweetener; your body likes to turn fructose into fat, so coconut sugar will help if your goal is maintaining a healthy weight.
- Coffee is the reason you’re here isn’t it?If you’re a long-time reader you’ll have heard us talk about the many health benefits of coffee before. If you haven’t? Aside from being a pick-me-up, Coffee helps you body burn fat, prevents tooth decay, lowers the risk of heart disease and stroke and may prevent some types of cancer (and more besides). All this and it tastes great too.
What You Need
So here’s what you need to make it:
- A pitcher or mason jar
- Coffee beans
- 4 oz Almond Milk
- 1 tsp ground cardamom
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- 2 tbsp coconut sugar
- 1 tbsp coconut cream
- ½ tsp vanilla or almond extract
How To Make It
Step 1 – Grind your coffee
The amount you use will depend on how strong you like your coffee. The recipe (3) that inspired this one called for making a hot brew coffee with 4 tbsp espresso blend and 12-14 oz of water.
So if that’s the method you’re using, those are good quantities to start with. There are a few brewing options, but regardless of which you choose, you’ll want a coarse grind.
Step 2 – Brew
If you have a French press, you can simply make a regular hot brew coffee. Add coffee to your French press, pour over water, and let it brew for 3-4 minutes before pressing the plunger.
Alternatives: If you’re making iced coffee, you can always start with a cold-brew. You don’t need fancy equipment, just a mason jar and a sieve will get you started but you can always use your favourite cold brew maker if you have one (if not, click here)
Just add the cardamom, cinnamon and nutmeg to your beans when you grind so you infuse the flavour.
Want to make it extra hydrating? Use coconut water instead of the regular one.
Step 3 – Wait
Once you’ve made your coffee, combine it with the rest of the ingredients (no need to cool first) and chill – it’s perfect to do this overnight.
PRO TIP: While you can cold-brew coffee on the countertop, this infusion is best done at cooler temperatures to discourage the growth of bacteria.
Step 4 – Enjoy!
Pour the mixture over ice, or enjoy it straight from the fridge. Either way you have a cup full of flavour that will pep you up and keep you going.
